Care packages revisited

in Missionary-Blogs.com News

Back in September I wrote a post suggesting that our missionaries write about care packages. At the time, I didn’t have the chance to properly follow up, so we’re going to try again.  If you wrote something back in September, that’s ok – just let me know and I’ll check it out.

You can read the original post for the details, but the basic idea was to have some of you write a post to give people ideas of what they could send a missionary to encourage her or him.  The deadline now is the end of June.  I emailed some of you, but I don’t have all your email addresses.

Once you’ve posted, let me know.  I’ll include the best ideas (and a link to some of your posts) in a new page here.

Now, this idea is driven by supply and demand – in other words, people want to know what they could send missionaries that would actually help or encourage them.  That’s why I’m doing this – to come up with general ideas for those people.

But I really failed to realize how difficult it is to write a post on your own blog without sounding greedy, discontent or self-serving!  I understand if you choose not to do it altogether, but here are some ideas for you if you’d like to participate:

  • Tell people that you’re doing it because of that guy over at Missionary-Blogs.com.  You’re supposed to do that anyway, it was one of the “rules”, but it helps if people know this wasn’t your idea.  It’s my fault!
  • Make your ideas general.  You don’t need to write about what you want, just write about what would encourage missionaries in general.  After all, you’re the people who know!  If you don’t tell people how to help missionaries, they will forever be guessing.
  • Just add a disclaimer (some of you did this already) – tell people you are content, and really don’t need a box of Hershey’s Special Dark Kisses.  However, if they’re looking for a way to make your day….
  • Write about a great care package you got in the past, and why it encouraged you.
  • Tell people why you don’t want certain things (for example, duty may be charged, you have enough, etc)
  • Mention materials that would nourish you or your family or friends spiritually.  Do you wish you had great Christian books in English?  Would small toys be useful in childrens’ ministry in your area?
  • I’m especially interested in ideas that would apply in many countries, not just yours.  You can give country-specific examples, but if you can also tell us how this may apply in other countries.
  • Thanks to those who have already posted!  Let me know if you haven’t already.  Remember, check out the original post for more ideas.
