Bush signed the Iraq War Resolution, the oil tanker Prestige sank off the Galician coast (oil spill), in Nigeria, more than 100 people were killed at an attack on the Miss World contestants, United Airlines filed for bankruptcy, a suicide truck-bomb attack destroyed the headquarters of Chechnya’s Moscow-backed government (72 dead), China Airlines Flight 611 brok up in flight, killing 225, Banco Azteca opened in Mexico, and Jimmy Carter won the Nobel Peace Prize.
