Literacy in Nicaragua

Literacy is a problem all over the world – yes, even in countries that statistically have a near 100% literacy rate.

Literacy

 So just imagine the challenges in a country where, according to the statistics, only about 2/3 can read.  Many of those are probably not reading well and understanding – and are probably not teaching others.

That’s the state of affairs in the country of Nicaragua.  And that’s why I’ve really enjoyed reading about literacy efforts going on there in the Name of the Lord.

Here are a few recent posts about literacy ministry in the country of Nicaragua:

  • a day in the life:  Tedd here. Going out to literacy class is always a learning experience. Last class was no exception…
  • The “Blind” Will “See”…:  When we met them 8 months ago, none of them could read…the majority didn’t even know the alphabet. They were blind to written words. We agreed to meet twice a week to learn to read & write; a few weeks later they were writing their names for the first time, a few months later…
  • Literacy Opens Doors:  This is Rosibel. She spends six days a week walking the streets of Rio Blanco, selling food to help provide for her family. She’s 13 years old and has never been to school…

Missionary Podcasts!

I went on a hunt today to see if I could find some missionaries with podcasts (audio or video).  I know there are some out there, but finding them isn’t always easy!  Anyway, here are a few from my first attempt – but I’m hoping you’ll help me out with your comments and tell me about more!

Sad to say, I found a few that are no longer functioning.  Come baaaack!  ;)
